An African safari is not complete without having a ride on a hot air-driven balloon.

In 1976, Alan Root and his spouse Joan- wildlife film producers, rode in a hot air-driven balloon to capture video clips of wildlife. It was a lot easier, to use the balloon to discover parts where a car was unable to access, to shoot spectacular aerials of wildlife.

From that point forward, the concept drew the interest of visitors who were prepared to spend top-dollar for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This gave birth to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.

Simply put, it's captivating! The airstreams bear us off course, above the rim of the Ngama hills and along straight into the Talek River. Beneath, a handful of gray-back Jackals scamper haphazardly amidst the shrubs and a hare darts to its underground hideaway.

Afloat, we have a superior eagle's eye vision of the immensity of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti Parks stretching as far as the eye can perceive. It appears endless.

We take 90 degrees angle and underneath we locate the tops of the heads of giraffes through the cover of acacia trees as they nibble the leaves, scarcely acknowledging us moving in the air in the sky above.

After one hour adrift, the flight ends with a bouncy landing bringing us back to the ground. Finally we crawl out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The elegance is that this breakfast occurs in the bush, wherever you land, and it's prepared as you see with the burners that a short while before held you suspended in the air. What a way to commence our morning safari!

"Through the years, there has been advancement in hot air balloon innovations. The burners are far more efficient and less noisy than the earliest balloon safaris" explains the captain.

"One of the things that surprises the majority of first-time balloonists is the utter calm, the peace as you sail above the savanah, the woodland and the rivers of the Masai Mara. The noises beneath drift clearly up-wards: a lion's roar, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched on the tips of the trees. If you're fortunate you will ascend high above for the scene of a life-time. " the captain offers.

After year end rains, the grass is rich green as we drive back to our lodge watching wildlife en-route. It is contrasting as these are the same grasslands which, in November, were golden, dried up and hash.

Out of the blue we bump into a mother cheetah marking her tree, spraying it with urine. Once done, she checks our company and then makes a soft chirping sound as she walks through the thicket. Probably she is looking for her cubs.

The plains are packed with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the scene is just awesome.
